Joist & deck accessories
Deck Accessories and Joist Bridging
A deck or joist package isn't complete without the right accessories. We supply the deck accessories and joist bridging your project needs, matched to the profiles and series we fabricate and delivered together with your joists and deck.
Composite & form deck
Pour Stop
Pour stop is a bent steel edge form installed at the perimeter of a concrete slab and around large openings. It is welded to the supporting steel and holds the wet concrete in place at the exact slab elevation, giving a clean, straight edge.
Its height matches the total slab thickness, and the gauge is selected according to the slab depth and how far the pour stop overhangs the support, following SDI selection criteria.
- Slab perimeters
- Floor openings
- Stair and shaft openings
- Slab steps
- Used with
- Composite floor deck and form deck
- Function
- Contains concrete at slab edges and openings
- Sizing
- Height equal to slab thickness; gauge by slab depth and overhang
- Installation
- Welded to supporting beams or perimeter angles
Flute closures
Cell Closures
Cell closures are formed steel pieces that seal the open flutes (cells) of the deck where it ends at a beam, wall, column or change in direction. On floor deck they keep concrete from leaking through the ribs during the pour; on roof deck they close the flutes at the building edge.
Each closure is shaped to match the rib geometry of the deck profile, so it fits tightly without field trimming.
- Deck ends at beams
- Walls and columns
- Changes in deck direction
- Building perimeter
- Used with
- Composite floor deck and roof deck
- Function
- Seals open deck flutes and prevents concrete leakage
- Sizing
- Formed to match each deck profile
- Installation
- Fastened to the deck or support before the pour
Sloped roofs
Ridge and Valley Plates
Ridge and valley plates are bent steel plates installed where roof deck panels meet at a change in slope. At a ridge, they bridge the gap between panels sloping down on each side; at a valley, they span the low point where two slopes meet.
They provide a continuous, flat surface for insulation and roofing and keep the diaphragm continuous across the slope change.
- Roof ridges
- Roof valleys
- Pitched joist roofs
- Crickets
- Used with
- Metal roof deck
- Function
- Closes gaps at changes in roof slope
- Sizing
- Bent to the roof slope of the project
- Installation
- Fastened over the deck at the ridge or valley line
Roof drainage
Sump Pans
Sump pans are recessed steel pans installed at roof drain locations. They replace the deck at the drain, creating a flat, depressed area where water collects and flows into the drain body.
Made from heavier-gauge steel than the surrounding deck, they support the drain and the roofing above while keeping the area around the drain properly sloped.
- Primary roof drains
- Overflow drains
- Flat and low-slope roofs
- Used with
- Metal roof deck
- Function
- Recessed base for roof drains
- Sizing
- Sized to the drain; heavier gauge than the deck
- Installation
- Set on the deck and fastened at drain locations
Joist stability
Joist Bridging
Joist bridging braces steel joists laterally so they stay plumb and stable during erection and in service. It is required by Steel Joist Institute (SJI) specifications, and the number of bridging rows depends on the joist series, span and chord size.
For certain spans, bolted diagonal bridging must be installed before the hoisting cables are released, so getting the right bridging on site is key to a safe erection.
Horizontal bridging
Continuous angles welded or bolted to the top and bottom chords of each joist, anchored at the walls or beams.
Diagonal (cross) bridging
Angles installed in an X pattern between joists and bolted to the chords, used on longer spans and LH/DLH joists.
- Used with
- K, KCS, LH and DLH joists
- Function
- Lateral stability during erection and in service
- Sizing
- Rows and angle size per SJI tables for the joist series and span
- Installation
- Welded or bolted to joist chords; anchored at the ends
