Steel Joist Institute
SJI Membership: What It Means for Contractors
Founded in 1928, the Steel Joist Institute maintains the standard specifications that govern how open web steel joists and joist girders are designed and manufactured in North America. Those specifications are referenced by U.S. building codes.

Standard designations

Clear responsibilities
The SJI Code of Standard Practice defines what the joist manufacturer, engineer of record and erector each handle, reducing disputes on site.

Safer erection
